Enigin
Enigin - Clearing the Smart Meter and Energy Consumption minefield.
There is much talk in the press about Smart Meters, Energy Consumption and the like. You might even have heard of the Carbon Trust and the UK Government’s requirement for all organizations to reduce their Carbon Footprint.
So what’s it all about?
You could see it as a bureaucratic minefield, but this is a field that Enigin specialize in and they can guide you through it. Eniscope; the “better than Class A” Smart Meter from Enigin is suitable for all manner of applications and installations. Step one of the Enigin Solution is to capture data via the Eniscope, this data is then manipulated by Enigin through their Power Portal web service and displayed on the end-users computer anywhere in the world. The displays are easy to read, user friendly, have a MAC-esque feel to them and are constantly being refined by the Enigin in-house web development team.
Lord Kelvin remarked that “one cannot save that which cannot be measured”. It therefore follows that the approach pioneered by Enigin to measure Energy Consumption as the first step in an Energy Saving program is the correct one.
Once armed with the information, that is to say, once wasted energy is identified, Enigin helps clients to source and select suitable applications to reduce the wastage thereby reducing Energy Consumption, helping to reduce Carbon Emissions and therefore reducing their own Carbon Footprint; all in line with UK Government policy.
Enigin can assist client organizations in applications to the Carbon Trust for UK Government funded financial backing by way of loans and grants to fund the initial investments. Enigin will also point their clients to a fantastic ROI (Return on Investment) usually within two years.
So, what’s it all about?
Enigin will install their Eniscope Smart Meter, monitor and measure your Energy Consumption and display the information to you through their Power Portal.
Enigin will assist you to identify the causes of wasted energy and suitable remedies.
Enigin will then walk you through the funding process for the initial investment and detail how swiftly you will get that investment back
Hardly a minefield, more of a walk in the park.

Should we be working with more energy efficient or energy aware companies?
I can’t believe the amount of junk that gets sent through to my email account every day. It’s particularly bad when I am away for a few days and come back to find it takes about 20 minutes to download all the emails from the main server. I then usually take another 20 minutes filtering through them trying to pick out work related items amongst all the promises to enhance this or that.
Occasionally a company is sneaky and doesn’t put a title on their email thus implying it is from a work colleague who has forgotten to include this detail. Of course, I open it only to find it is from another Company that has tricked me and more than likely has installed a nasty bug on my machine for good measure. It shocks me to see how unregulated the internet is when it is such a big part of our world. Surely someone needs to, not necessarily take complete control, but at least to monitor exactly what pollution is running through the system; what we would genuinely benefit from seeing and what are, very obviously, scams.
It worries me that my parents who aren’t necessarily savvy with the net can very easily get confused with what is or isn’t genuine. You hear about these stories on the news about elderly people who are getting tricked into paying out thousands on pounds to evil manipulative companies because they honestly can’t see it’s a scam.
My family are so important to me and it makes my blood boil to see how these companies go about manipulating the vulnerable. What sort of a world would I be bringing my children into that exposes them to this? Are they going to have to sift through the junk to see what’s real?
One of the sifted emails that came through to me the other day was from a company called Enigin promising to actually save me money. You know how it is when you go onto a website and can’t go any further without giving some details to them such as your email address. I must have, at some point, briefly been looking on their website and given them my email address. I’m finding these companies must treat this vital bit of information like gold dust! Anyway, I thought this email from Enigin was a tad far fetched and would have dismissed it instantly but read on after seeing their goal was to make a meaningful contribution to the world by offering energy saving solutions to companies such as mine and combating climate change at the same time. It struck a cord with me as I have very similar values at the moment. I followed up on this and am now waiting on more information on exactly what they can do specifically for my company which is quite exciting.
My perceptions have changed and I want to be involved with these companies who are trying hard to make a difference. I want to be able to make a difference so I’m not handing a broken world down to my children. Why should they have to repair the damage I’ve contributed to? We are finding out more and more every day the extent of the ruin and we can’t ignore this any more. Winston Churchill once said “Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened”.
I think we’re done running now, don’t you?

Update 30/11/09
By not looking at this page for awhile I may have inadvertently proven my point about the ease at which most people ignore important issues, such as energy conservation. I was cleaning out my inbox the other day in the run up to Christmas and found the email with the additional information that Enigin sent me about their energy saving process. I decided that it was time to stop pushing this to the back of my inbox, after all I had previously said that it struck a cord with my current values and I did a bit of further research into the company. Other then some very nicely laid out websites, I also found a rather interesting article concerning Enigin on earthtimes which is a newsfeed website. If you are interested at all in Enigin and what they do, I recommend that you take a look at it, it may help you to make up your mind for yourself.

Update on Enigin 07/12/09
So I know that in my last post I was pushing you all to make up your minds about the company Enigin, and so I really shouldn’t be influencing your decision too much. But the more I look into these guys, the more amazing they look!
I was looking into all of the different products and systems that they offer and was amazed to find out that not only does their software help you to reduce the company’s carbon footprint, but it also helps with overall efficiency and easing the workload as well. A great example of this is what they call the Nucleus which as well as tracking your energy consumption, also tracks your sales and customer communications. And Igloo, a content management system powering websites and allowing distributers to manage their own sites without installing software on their PCs. I really think these guys are worth a look!
